MEET ELLIE

Ellie is a rescued Shetland Sheepdog whose hobbies include waiting for squirrels to come out of trees and tummy rubs. Ellie recently underwent dental surgery at Island Animal Hospital to have a fractured canine tooth removed, a surgery which has helped Ellie smile once again!

Tooth fracture can affect any animal with teeth but are extremely common in dogs, because dogs chew on hard items. Other causes of tooth fracture include car accidents or other trauma to the face. Gum inflammation, infection, abscesses, pulp exposure, and facial swelling can all be effects of tooth fractures

Tooth fracture can affect any animal with teeth but are extremely common in dogs, because dogs chew on hard items. Other causes of tooth fracture include car accidents or other trauma to the face. Gum inflammation, infection, abscesses, pulp exposure, and facial swelling can all be effects of tooth fractures. A dental examination under anesthesia, X-rays, and potentially oral surgery are typically treatment recommended treatments. If the fractured tooth is left alone, it is typically very painful and can lead to the death of the tooth. If the tooth dies, it provides bacteria a place to thrive and ultimately enter the blood stream where it can affect liver, kidneys, and the heart.
